WHAT IS RELAY FOR LIFE?

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's nation signature activity. Since it's conception, Relay has raised millions of dollars across the country in the fight against cancer. The Relay is an all night, non-athletic family oriented team event that celebrates cancer survivorship, health, teamwork and the community. Because of its unique format, its novel approach to "FUN raising", and its focus on the cancer experience, Relay continues to grow at a phenomenal rate, breaking income and participation records in communities large and small.

Corporate and community teams come together in a friendly competition to see who can raise the most money and have the most fun! Many groups are now using the Relay as a team-building activity or even the company picnic. Teams of 8 to 15 members are organized and led by a team captain. During the event, each team has a representative on the track at all times, either walking or running in relay-style shifts. On-site team competitions can include campsite creativity, best pajamas, or most money raised.

The Cancer Survivor's Victory Lap is the first lap of the Relay and kicks off the celebration. All area cancer survivors and their families are invited to participate in the opening ceremonies of the Relay.

After sunset, our very special Luminary Ceremony takes place. Luminaries will line the track and are lit during a program to remember or honor loved ones touched by cancer. A favorite segment among Relay participants, the Luminary Ceremony reminds us of the importance of continuing our crusade.

Participating as a Survivor

Survivors are the reason we are there. Relay for Life is about the community taking up the fight and raising funds to find the cure for cancer. The kickoff lap is walked by cancer survivors and is one of the most powerful moments of the event. If you are or know of someone who is a cancer survivor, contact

Participating with a Donation

The purpose of the event is raising funds. If you are unable to participate that night, your donation made payable to the American Cancer Society will be greatly appreciated. And another meaningful way to donate is with a Luminary.

Luminaries can be purchased in honor of a cancer survivor or in memory of your loved one who lost that battle. At sunset, the track, lined with all the luminary candles, will be aglow and the laps walked will be in silence. The luminaries will then burn thoughout the evening as a reminder to all participants of the reason for the Relay.
